Drop the Weight

This week in youth, we talked about the things that weigh us down spiritually. Our goal was to help students recognize that God wants freedom for them and that sometimes we have to let go of things that keep us from growing closer to Him.

Main Scripture

Hebrews 12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us

Psalm 55:22 Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.

Matthew 11:28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

What We Talked About

Students discussed how people often carry invisible “weights,” such as:

  • anxiety and pressure

  • insecurity and comparison

  • distractions

  • unhealthy habits

  • bitterness or unforgiveness

  • hidden sin

  • fear and shame

We reminded students that:

  • not every weight is obvious

  • some things may not be sinful, but still distract us from God

  • God invites us to surrender burdens instead of hiding them

“Some of us want God to move—but we’re carrying things He asked us to drop.”

Here are a few simple ways to continue this week’s conversation with your student:

Ask Open-Ended Questions

  • What do you think “weights” means in Hebrews 12:1?

  • What kinds of pressure do teens carry today?

  • What helps you feel closer to God?

  • Is there anything that’s been distracting you spiritually lately?

Encourage, Don’t Interrogate

Your student may not immediately open up deeply, and that’s okay. The goal is to create a safe environment where honest conversations can happen over time.

Share Your Own Story

Students connect strongly when parents are honest. Consider sharing:

  • a time God helped you let go of something difficult

  • how stress or distraction affects your walk with God

  • practical ways you stay spiritually healthy

Family Challenge This Week

Choose one “weight” your family can intentionally lay down this week together.

Examples:

  • reducing unnecessary screen time

  • choosing encouragement over negativity

  • spending intentional time with God

  • forgiving someone

  • removing a distraction from your daily routine

“God, help our family recognize the things that weigh us down spiritually. Give us courage to surrender distractions, fears, and sin to You. Prepare our hearts for what You want to do in and through us. Amen.”
