The Power of the Tongue

This Week in Youth

This week we talked about how our words have incredible power. Students learned that the things they say can either build others up or tear them down. In a world filled with sarcasm, gossip, online comments, and constant communication, God calls us to use our words to bring life.

Main Scriptures

  • James 3:5–10

  • Proverbs 18:21

"Death and life are in the power of the tongue." — Proverbs 18:21

What We Learned

  • Our words have lasting impact.

  • Once words are spoken, we cannot take them back.

  • Encouragement can strengthen someone's faith and confidence.

  • Gossip, criticism, and careless comments can cause deep hurt.

  • God wants our speech to reflect His love and truth.

Ask Your Student

Use these questions to continue the conversation at home:

  • What stood out to you most from the lesson?

  • Have you ever had someone's words encourage you when you needed it most?

  • Why do you think gossip is so common?

  • How can social media make it easier to use words carelessly?

  • Is there an area where you feel God is asking you to change the way you speak?

  • Who is someone you could intentionally encourage this week?

Family Challenge: Speak Life

As a family, choose one person each day and intentionally speak words of encouragement to them. It could be:

  • A note in a lunchbox

  • A text message

  • A compliment at dinner

  • Thanking someone for what they do

  • Praying out loud for a family member

At the end of the week, talk about how it changed the atmosphere in your home.

Conversation Starter

At dinner, have each family member answer this question:

"What is one encouraging thing someone has said to you that you've never forgotten?"

You may be surprised by how much a few words can mean.

Parent Encouragement

Parents, your words carry tremendous weight in your teenager's life. While none of us speak perfectly, the encouragement, correction, and love you consistently offer can shape how your child sees themselves and how they speak to others.

May your home be a place where truth is spoken in love, forgiveness is quick, and words are used to give life.

Prayer for This Week

"Lord, help our family use our words wisely. Guard our hearts and our mouths. Teach us to speak truth with kindness, encourage one another, and reflect You in the way we communicate. In Jesus' name, amen."
