This Week’s Youth Lesson
This week we explored the parable found in the Bible where Jesus said:
“The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.”
Our goal was to help students understand that the Kingdom of God is worth more than anything this world can offer.
Lesson Activity: “Would You Buy the Field?”
Students participated in an interactive game in which they had one month to come up with enough imaginary money to buy a field containing hidden treasure worth millions.
The catch:
The only things they could “sell” were necessities and comforts from their everyday life.
Every item sold came with consequences for the rest of the month.
Examples included:
phone
electricity
transportation
food
hobbies
entertainment
The purpose of the activity was not to encourage unhealthy choices or irresponsibility, but to help students think deeply about:
sacrifice
priorities
temporary comfort vs. eternal value
what they truly treasure most
Main Teaching Points
1. What We Treasure Shapes Our Decisions
The man in Jesus’ parable sold everything because he understood the value of what he had found.
We challenged students to consider:
What matters most in my life?
What competes with God for my attention and affection?
Would my priorities show that Jesus is my greatest treasure?
2. Following Jesus Sometimes Requires Sacrifice
We discussed how following Christ may sometimes cost:
comfort
popularity
convenience
habits
distractions
But Jesus teaches that what we gain in Him far outweighs what we surrender.
3. Eternal Things Matter Most
Teenagers are constantly surrounded by pressure to chase temporary things:
status
approval
entertainment
material possessions
This lesson encouraged students to think beyond temporary satisfaction and focus on eternal purpose.
Questions To Discuss At Home
Here are a few simple ways to continue the conversation together:
What was the hardest thing for you to “sell” in the game?
Why do you think the man in the parable sold everything so willingly?
What are some things that can distract people from God today?
What does it look like to put God first in everyday life?
What do you think Jesus meant when He compared Heaven to treasure?
Family Challenge This Week
As a family, talk about:
“What do we value most?”
Consider:
How do our schedules reflect our priorities?
How do our attitudes reflect our priorities?
What practical ways can we put God first this week?
Encouragement for Parents
Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to invest in your students spiritually. Teen years are full of competing voices and distractions, and we believe moments like these help students build a faith that is genuine, personal, and lasting.
Please continue praying with your student and encouraging conversations about what it means to truly follow Jesus.
